Women often complain about pain during intercourse and avoid consulting a gynecologist. The pain often goes from worse to worst and no medical assistance is taken, which can be dangerous. The ladies who’re facing this problem every time during the intercourse as a result of which they start avoiding intercourse should be aware of the causes and the treatment.
CAUSES
Vaginismus – This is a common condition in which there is a spasm in the vaginal muscles, when intercourse is attempted. It is mainly caused by the fear of being hurt and results in painful intercourse.
Vaginal infections – These conditions are common and include yeast infections.
Problems with the cervix (opening to the uterus) – In this case, the private part can reach the cervix at maximum penetration, so problems with the cervix (such as infections) can cause pain during intercourse and deep penetration.
Problems with the uterus – These problems may include fibroids that can cause deep intercourse pain.
Endometriosis – A condition in which the endometrium (tissue lining the uterus) grows outside the uterus and hence becomes the main cause of pain during intercourse.
Problems with the ovaries – Such problems might include cysts on the ovaries.
Pelvic inflammatory disease – The tissues deep inside become badly inflamed and the pressure of intercourse causes deep pain.
Ectopic pregnancy – A pregnancy in which a fertilized egg develops outside of the uterus.
Menopause – The vaginal lining can lose its normal moisture and become dry and thin.
Intercourse too soon after surgery or childbirth.
Sexually transmitted diseases – Possible reasons of pain during intercourse may include genital warts, herpes sores or other STDs.
Injury to the vulva – These injuries may include a tear from childbirth or from a cut (episiotomy) in the perineum (area of skin between the private part and the anus) that is made during labor.
Vulvodynia – The vulval area may have severe pain on lightest of touch during intercourse.
Psychogenic – If the woman had intercourse abuse, forced intercourse, doesn’t like partner, foul smell, anxiety due to any reason then that may hinder the lubrication.
Lichen Plaunus – One of the main reason of discomfort during intercourse is Lichen Plaunus. It is a skin condition which causes inflammation and ulcer like changes of the skin. Lichen Plaunus can occur on any part of the body including the vulva, more often in women of child bearing age
THE SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF LICHEN PLAUNUS OF THE VULVA AND THE VAGINA
Increased vaginal discharge usually sticky, heavy and yellow.
Redness, soreness, burning and raw areas of the vulva and private part.
Bleeding or pain with intercourse.
Scarring which may cause shortening, narrowing or closure of the private part.
Symptoms may vary from woman to woman and may range from mild to severe.
It can be diagnosed by looking at the skin changes commonly associated with lichen plaunus. Vaginal discharge is also examined. On occasion of a biopsy or small sample of skin might be needed to help establish the diagnosis when the above findings are not clear.
Cause of Lichen Plaunus is not clear, some authorities put forward autoimmune etiology though.
